Anja Simonsen

Anja Simonsen is an Associate Professor at the Department of Anthropology, the University of Copenhagen. She is the Principal Investigator of the European Research Council Starting Grant ‘The Social Life of Dead Bodies: A new ethnographic approach to migrant deaths in and around the Mediterranean Sea’ (SOLID) and the Novo Nordic Foundation research project ‘Cervical cancer Awareness, Resources, and Empowerment for Self-care among internal migrant women in industrial zones in the global south’ (CARES). She is working through an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to research on migration, death and health across Ethiopia, Somaliland, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Vietnam and Tanzania. Her publications focus on the themes of migration, death, social invisibility, temporality, uncertainty, European Search & Rescue operations, biometric technologies and health interventions, including her monograph Tahriib – Journey’s into the Unknown: An Ethnography of Uncertainty in Migration  (2023).
