Atreyee Sen

Atreyee Sen is Professor of Anthropology at the University of Copenhagen and Principal Investigator of the European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant, ‘Anger, Legitimised: Amplified anger and its rhetorics of legitimation in the 21st century (ANGLE).’  Her research focuses on urban South Asia, where she has examined militant political movements, protest and dissidence, and micro-cultures of violence in cities such as Mumbai, Hyderabad, Calcutta, and Dharamsala. She has published widely on gender, conflict, youth vigilantism, and cultures of confinement, including her acclaimed monograph ‘Shiv Sena Women: Violence and Communalism in a Bombay Slum’. Sen’s research trajectory challenges narrow representations of violence and inequalities in non-Western societies, and contributes to broader debates on subaltern politics, affective landscapes, digital interconnectedness, and contemporary urban marginalities.
