Nick Baigent

Nick Baigent is a Post-Doctoral Researcher with the ANGLE Project. Nick currently researches post-imperial anger towards Russia in Georgia, focusing on legacies of resentment, Russian colonial history, and contemporary political divisions. He earned his PhD from Malmo University in 2025 where he completed a monograph examining local resistance to hydropower development in Georgia. This work examined the international, national, and local factors that have hampered the construction of large-scale hydropower infrastructure within the country.

Prior to this, Nick earned his Master’s from the University of Glasgow where he studied informal networks amongst IDPs in Ukraine. His work interests centre on understanding different manifestations of power – social, political, and local. As such, much of his work has explores and seeks to understand forms of resistance, sources of localised identity, infrastructure politics, and resource extraction.

Outside of academia Nick has worked in numerous trail building and conservation related positions across New Zealand, the USA, Canada, and Georgia.
